Assessments Overview

Assessments work by inputting content to create a question bank that your learners can take, whether documents, text, or manually creating questions. In the case of documents and text, the LMS will use AI to automatically create questions and answers for the assessment. This assessment can be assigned to learners for them to take. Even better, these assessments have their own reports so you can see line by line how effective your questions are in regards to your learners' retention.

Creation and Configuration

 Creating an assessment

Assessments live in the Content section. To create one, select Add Course > Assessment, then choose Add Assessment at the bottom of the Assessments tab. You'll pick one of the creation types below.

Generated questions come in four types:

• Fill in the blank

• Multiple choice

• Multiple select

• True/false

Every generated question is fully editable, and you can mix generated and manual questions in the same assessment. All questions are stored in the Question Bank.

About AI generation and the Assistant license

Generating questions utilizing the Text and Resource options require ✨Assistant AI for Studio to work.  If you don't have one, these options appear disabled, and selecting one explains how to get access.

Everything else in this article works without an Assistant license. Manual creation, editing questions, managing question pools, and configuring settings are available to every admin who can manage assessments. To learn more, see  Assessments - Add an Assessment using ✨Assistant AI 

Assessments Inside Studio courses

If you build courses in Studio, you can also add an assessment page directly to a course. With an Assistant license, that page offers a Generate from Course Content option that writes questions from the course sections you select. Limit Time between Attempts sets how long a learner must wait before retaking the assessment, in days, hours, and minutes.

Accessibility Accommodations

Learners who need extra time can be marked for Assessment Accommodations from their learner profile. The default amount of extra time is set in Site Settings.

Editing Questions

Select View Questions and Answers on the assessment information to see every question in a list. Edit and enhance answers to allow for a more robust assessment, and prevent obvious answers from being used. Use the options on the right to edit or delete a question.

Order Randomization: Administrators have the option to randomize answer order, helping to prevent learners from memorizing answer positions.

Image Upload and Question Positioning: Administrators can easily upload images directly within the HTML editor for questions. Images can be added, removed, and displayed to learners, with horizontal or vertical layout options and the ability to expand images in a new tab for greater accessibility.

Rich Formatting: Both multiple choice and multiple-select question types support an HTML editor for answers. This allows administrators to apply formatting such as bold, underline, italics, links, lists, and color highlights, increasing clarity and engagement for learners. HTML-formatted answers will appear in assessments, while grids will display plain text versions.

Question Pool

Every assessment starts with a default pool called Main. If you generated the assessment from content, the Main pool already holds the generated questions. To add variety, select Add Question Pool, give it a name, and it appears under Main.

To create another pool, select Add Question Pool and enter a name. The new pool appears below Main. Select any pool to edit its name or choose how many questions it contributes to the assessment. As an example, pools could help balance difficulty. For example, you could create Easy, Medium, and Hard pools and set how many questions each one contributes.

• You can include a specific number of questions from each pool or select All Questions. For example: Selecting 6 questions from Main and 5 from a second pool gives learners 11 questions total.

• Selecting All Questions for a Main pool containing 15 questions and a second pool containing 1 question gives learners 16 questions total.

The above quiz was created via a document, so the "Main" pool which is the default, already has the 15 questions that were generated from that document. If necessary, a second pool could be created with different questions to provide more variety for the quiz. Select "add question pool" and give it a name, and it will list under the main pool.
