Password Management for Learners

To change your password, go to the Profile > Password page in the LMS. Passwords must have at least eight characters with at least one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter, one number, and one special character.

1) How the LMS Checks Passwords

When you set or change a password, the LMS blocks choices that are too easy to guess and shows:

“You have selected an easily guessed password. Please enter a new password.”

This happens when:

  • Exact match to a known-bad password: e.g., password, 123456, qwerty.

  • Near match (small tweaks) to a known-bad password: adding/changing 1–2 characters isn’t enough.
    Examples: p@ssword, password1!, !Password.

Blocked examples:

  • Exact: password, letmein, 12345678

  • Near: p@ssword, !password1, Password1!

2) Create a Strong, Accepted Password

Requirements to create a Password in the LMS:

  • contains at least one uppercase letter
  • contains at least one lowercase letter
  • contains at least one number
  • contains at least one special character
  • contains at least 8 characters

Essential rules:

  • Aim for 8+ characters.

  • Use a unique password for the LMS (don’t reuse from other sites).

  • Avoid predictable swaps (a→@, o→0) on weak bases.

  • Don’t include personal info (names, birthdays, addresses).

  • Consider a password manager to generate/store strong passwords.

3) Change Your Password While Logged In - (Step-by-Step)

  1. Browse to your organization’s LMS and sign in.

  2. In the top navigation bar, select your Profile icon.

  3. In the Profile menu, select Profile.

  4. On Profile → Details, select Password.

  5. On Profile → Password, enter your new password, then re-enter it to confirm.

  6. Select Save Password.

  7. Look for the confirmation message that your password was successfully changed.

If you see “easily guessed password,” start over with an unrelated passphrase (see Section 2).

4) Expired or Forgotten Passwords

  • Expiration: If your password expires, you’ll be prompted at sign-in to create a new one. Use the passphrase recipe above.

  • Forgot password: Click Forgot Password on the sign-in page and follow the email instructions. Check spam/junk if you don’t see the message.

5) Help & Troubleshooting (FAQs Included)

I keep getting the “easily guessed” message. What now?
Start fresh with unrelated words (e.g., oak-planet!42-paper). Don’t “dress up” weak bases like password with ! or a digit.

Are character substitutions like @ for a bad?
Not by themselves—but using them to tweak a weak word will still be blocked. Begin with unrelated words, then add variety.

Can I use Password1! if it’s long enough?
No. It’s a near-match to a known weak password.

Will support ever ask for my password?
Never. If anyone asks for it, don’t share—report it.

6) Quick Do’s & Don’ts

Do:

  • Use long, unique passphrases (12+ chars).

  • Store passwords in a reputable password manager.

  • Change your LMS password if you suspect exposure elsewhere.

Don’t:

  • Reuse passwords from other sites.

  • Base your password on weak words (password, welcome, admin)—even with tweaks.

  • Share your password with anyone.

Key Takeaways:

  • The LMS blocks known weak passwords and close variations to protect your account.

  • Passphrases are the easiest way to create strong, accepted passwords.

  • To update your password, follow the Profile → Password steps above; use Forgot Password if needed.
